Country Mixed with Rap
and Blended Together So Smooth You'll Hit Replay When It Ends
8 Questions with Country Rapper Colt Ford about his latest Album
Ride Through the Country
In a day in age when everyone and their brother thinks they’re the next
big country star, it’s very refreshing to hear some new music that
breaks the mold
and steps away from the norm. Listening to country music
since I was a child, I’ve seen singers come and go and have learned that
most of the big names who stick around write and perform their own music
and usually do it a bit different than the cookie cutter artists who
come and go so fast.
To hear Colt Ford sing/rap, you can’t help but start moving your feet,
tapping your fingers on the steering wheel and his hypnotic lyrics make
you want to hit replay every time the CD ends. To describe his music is
almost impossible because it touches almost every genre played on the
radio today.
It’s almost normal these days to flip between four or five stations and
hear the same artists being played on each station. Country has gone
pop, rock has gone country and the Blues have always been a major part
of the country scene. There have been a few artists who have
successfully blended hip-hop with some country twang in the past few
years.
Kid Rock is probably the most well known artist who has blended the two
genres but Toby Keith, Trace Adkins, Tim McGraw are just a few major
artists who have all throw out tunes that blended the two musical styles
with great success.

Colt Ford does it better than all of them combined and sounds fantastic
doing it. Listening to ‘Ride Through the Country’, the title cut off his
new album, which will grab ahold of your ears and an hour later, you’ll
have found a few new favorites to add to the iPod list.
Those haters who claim they can’t stand the hillbilly country style of
music; well Colt Ford will be a great introduction for you and you’ll
still feel you’re not selling out to the rap, hip-hop crowd.
We had a chance to sit down with Colt Ford and ask him a few questions
about his past and what his style of music is all about.
1. How did you get into music and what is your favorite part about the
whole music scene?
Colt Ford: I have had Music in Me my whole Life. I was into it as soon as I could
Move I Guess. My Favorite thing is there are no rules to music it can be
whatever you imagine.
2. In your Bio, it says you toured the world as a Pro PGA Golfer before
you cut your first album. I’d have to say your background goes from
complete polar opposites when you consider you were writing rap songs
for artists at a young age, playing golf on the best courses in the
world, and grew up in a small-town just outside Athens, Georgia. Could
you tell us a little bit about this chain of events and how you were
able to go from one to the other?
CF: I don’t know that there was a chain of events. I have always done
all of that, it feels normal to me. I guess it is just crazy for
everyone else. I understand why it is crazy to ya'll but it's really
just who I am.
3. You’re married with two kids. Did you meet your wife out on the PGA
Tour or is she a hometown Georgia Peach?
CF: She is a Georgia Peach who grew up in Macon Ga. I met her through a
high school friend when she moved to Athens after college. She doesn’t
care about golf at all, it is boring to her. I think she likes music a
lot more. She is the reason I am doing music I would not be doing this
without her, she is the BEST!
4. The songs on “Ride Through the Country” are such an awesome blend of
good time, drinking music. Did you have a hard time picking the song
selection or is all the music you write this way?
CF: Well I think it is a mix of all kinds of things and I am just glad
folks like it. I didn’t really cut any extra songs. What I wrote is what
I put on the record.
5. Your diverse co-writing credentials include country music songwriter
and recording artist Jamey Johnson, songwriter/guitarist Jeremy Popoff
of the alt rock band Lit, and hip-hop writer Attitude. Other musical
contributions include country artist John Michael Montgomery and country
music duo Montgomery Gentry, hip hop artists Bone Crusher and Sunny
Ledfurd, and No Doubt’s Adrian Young. Again, we go from complete polar
opposites here! How did you get all these top name acts to contribute on
your debut album?
CF: Well they are all good friends of mine. John Michael, Montgomery
Gentry, and Jamey Johnson all heard my stuff and really liked it and
were kind enough to be on the record. The rest of the folks I knew and
was good friends with. So it was easy when they heard it. they liked it,
and it just came together.
6. You say that you still consider yourself an ‘Average Joe’ despite
having traveled the world already with the PGA, and now going back out
on tour for your new album. Do you ever sit down and wonder if it’s all
worth it after all you’ve done already?
CF: You should never sit around and be satisfied with what you have
done. I will never stop until folks don’t want to see me anymore. Then
they might have to ask me twice.
7. Your song ‘Twisted’ seems to fit the current state of our country.
Talking about working dark to dark and still being broke with mamma
working double shifts just to make ends meet. Did you write that
recently or is just one of those songs that happen to fit the current
state of affairs to a ‘T’?
CF: It is kind of a life song for me and I wrote it about a year ago,
but it really fits now. I guess though my folks have always worked like
that it is the way I was raised.
8. Any plans for your second album or are you still too caught up with
this sure to be classic debut?
CF: Like I said you can’t just sit around and talk about what you have
already done. I am in the process of working on the new album right now
and I want it to be better than the first. I don’t know if it will but I
am sure going to put all I got into it. That is how I do everything!
